About

Pentire Mine 3D Viewer

Designed by Ben Sumpter. A research viewer combining the surveyed underground workings of Pentire Mine with LiDAR terrain and the developing historical reconstruction of Pentire / Pentire Glaze.

Navigation. Drag to orbit; pinch or mouse-wheel to zoom; two-finger drag on touchscreens, or right-drag / Shift-drag on desktop, to pan relative to the current view. Tap visible lines or surface points to inspect them. Measure snaps to the visible 3D survey before falling back to terrain.

Terrain

Environment Agency 1 m LiDAR DTM tiles E190000_N075000 and E190000_N080000 are first mosaicked into one seamless 1 m raster, then sampled to a 4 m runtime mesh clipped to the supplied Pentire study boundary. This removes the artificial N=80000 tile-edge trench present in v0.1. Surface research/context vectors are draped to the merged DTM; underground Survex geometry is not.

Historical interpretation

The surface markers combine mapped/observed locations and explicit research hypotheses. Every marker exposes a confidence statement in Inspect. In particular, Whim Shaft → later Engine Shaft, the South Hill pumped shaft, and Derrick Shaft remain evidence-led interpretations rather than silent renamings.

Cost Book Explorer

The Cost Book panel embeds the complete diplomatic transcription through manuscript p.237, monthly cost-sheet totals, reconstructed workforce/career data, merchant bills, meetings and mapped-site mention indexes. Range calculations keep authoritative monthly totals separate from analytical subsets such as extracted labour and merchant rows.

Coordinate system

EPSG:27700 / British National Grid. Elevations are metres OD. No vertical exaggeration is used.

Surface context

User-supplied OSM road, waterway and building GeoPackages, the definitive public-rights-of-way layer, tithe record points, and OSGB c.1900 historic map points are clipped/registered to the study area and draped over the merged LiDAR surface. The supplied tithe file contains point locations rather than parcel polygons, so no tithe or field boundary is fabricated. BGS 1:625,000 bedrock and superficial geology is embedded as an offline terrain overlay.

Online mapping

Optional BGS, Esri, NLS and OpenStreetMap layers require network access and retain their providers' attribution. BGS/Esri requests are made directly in EPSG:27700; Web-Mercator tile layers use a local EPSG:27700→3857 affine registration with sub-metre maximum fitting error across the study area, then texture directly onto the terrain mesh. The core terrain and mine survey run offline.

Start measuring, then tap near a visible Survex line or surface point to snap to its actual 3D geometry. Otherwise the point falls back to the DTM. Plan distance is British National Grid XY distance; 3D distance includes elevation.
