Sakmarian

The age of the Cisuralian interval (Permian), approximately 293.52–290.1 Ma according to the ICS June 2026 chart.

Language and route: Russian river-name. Russian river-name → international English. Named after Sakmara River, southern Urals.

Literal gloss: from the Sakmara River

The name and its history

Ruzhentsev’s independent stage separation during the 1930s; older term linked to Karpinsky · See attributed dates and cited original / standardisation works; first-use priority qualified where noted

What does the word literally mean?
From the sakmara river. Immediate scientific language-route: Russian river-name → international English. This is a locality-based or geographical term, not a description of a universal geological event.
What did the original author mean?
An ammonoid-defined interval split out of a historically much broader Artinskian succession, not initially identical in rank and limits to today’s global stage.
Why was the name needed?
Russian workers progressively subdivided Karpinsky’s broad Artinskian concept in response to increasingly resolved fossil successions.
What evidence supported the original concept?
Ammonoid faunal successions allowed Ruzhentsev to distinguish an earlier Sakmarian interval; conodonts later contributed to global boundary definition.
How has geology changed the concept?
Now a formal stage between Asselian and Artinskian. Earliest appearance of the geographic term and establishment at modern stage rank are separate historical questions.

Further historical context

*Naming and context.* Russian workers progressively subdivided Karpinsky’s broad Artinskian concept in response to increasingly resolved fossil successions.

*Evidence and later scope.* Ammonoid faunal successions allowed Ruzhentsev to distinguish an earlier Sakmarian interval; conodonts later contributed to global boundary definition. Now a formal stage between Asselian and Artinskian. Earliest appearance of the geographic term and establishment at modern stage rank are separate historical questions.

Editorial qualification

Attribution as “coined by Karpinsky in 1874” is not secure for the modern independent stage; record separate milestones.
