Metapelite
An aluminium-rich metamorphic rock generally derived from fine-grained, clay-rich sediment; the name carries a protolith/compositional implication.
Language and route: International scientific geological compound ← Greek. Scientific meta- + pelite, a term ultimately from Greek pēlós ‘mud, clay’.
Literal gloss: metamorphosed pelitic material

- What does the word literally mean?
- Metapelite compounds meta- with pelite (‘mud/clay rock’). Its scientific use identifies a metamorphosed protolith or characteristic chemistry, not a single fixed mineral assemblage.
- What did the original author mean?
- Petrographers have used pelite ambiguously for both sediments and metamorphic products; the IUGS explicitly recommends metapelite when the metamorphic context is intended.
- Why was the name needed?
- A separate name was necessary because crystal-rich metamorphic products may no longer retain the recognisable texture of the original mud or shale.
- What evidence supported the original concept?
- Inferred clay-rich chemistry, diagnostic metamorphic mineral assemblages, relict sedimentary structures and outcrop relations provide evidence, but any specific precursor should be supported.
- How has geology changed the concept?
- The modern term commonly has an alumina-rich compositional implication, while the IUGS says protolith-based metamudstone may be preferable when the original rock can be confidently identified.
Further historical context
No single original inventor of metapelite is claimed.
Composition and metamorphic process cannot be read back solely from an attractive literal gloss.
