Facies

A distinctive set of observable geological characteristics—such as sedimentary texture, lithology or fossils—used to characterise rocks and infer depositional setting.

Language and route: Geological borrowing from Latin via European scientific usage. Latin faciēs, ‘face, form, appearance’; Amanz Gressly used it as a geological concept in French-language work on the Swiss Jura published in 1838.

Literal gloss: face; aspect; appearance

The name and its history

Amanz Gressly (geological concept) · 1838

What does the word literally mean?
Latin ‘face’ or ‘appearance’, not a literal ‘rock environment’.
What did the original author mean?
Gressly used differences in lithology and fossils across Jura successions to distinguish laterally changing aspects of formations and draw inferences about their environments.
Why was the name needed?
Rocks of broadly comparable age were not uniform from place to place. Their lateral variation threatened a simple assumption that each named formation must look the same everywhere.
What evidence supported the original concept?
Field mapping in the Jura, changes in rock types and fossils, spatial and stratigraphic relationships; these are documented in the historical analyses of Gressly’s monograph.
How has geology changed the concept?
The term expanded to sedimentary, metamorphic, seismic and other special facies; environmental interpretations must be distinguished from the observed facies characteristics.

Further historical context

This is one of the most consequential single lexical innovations in geology: Gressly’s 1838 observations supplied a concept for lateral variation within geological units.

The original French-language publication is available in Swiss digital collections. An accessible 2024 historiographical review explains the fossil and lithological evidence behind it.

Editorial qualification

Credit is for geological use of facies; the Latin noun long predates 1838. The digitised original is linked; exact quotation not claimed.
