The name and its history

Adam Sedgwick · 1835 (published announcement)

What does the word literally mean?
Toponymic adjective from Cambria, ‘Wales’; no separate lexical meaning can be extracted from Cambrian beyond this geographic derivation.
What did the original author mean?
Sedgwick’s name denotes Wales (Cambria), the key region of his early work.
Why was the name needed?
Extensive fossil-bearing older strata needed to be distinguished from formations then assigned to the Silurian.
What evidence supported the original concept?
Field mapping of North Wales and fossil collections underpinned the first divisions.
How has geology changed the concept?
The system’s original extent has shifted profoundly, partly because the Ordovician was separated from the disputed overlap.

Further historical context

Adam Sedgwick established the Cambrian as a named system in the 1830s, working in North Wales; a joint Sedgwick–Murchison announcement appeared in 1835. The system initially encompassed strata later redistributed as geological correlation advanced.

The disputes over Sedgwick’s Cambrian and Murchison’s Silurian classifications helped motivate Lapworth to introduce an intervening Ordovician in 1879.
